Different experiences of the COVID-19 winter

Viewed across the UK, excess deaths in 2nd wave (Sep-now) have been 28% for men and 18% for women of the 1st wave (Mar-Jun). Across the North, Midlands and devolved countries of the UK, the 2nd wave has been harsher than the mean - 45% and 31% respectively. Elsewhere, much milder - 7% and 1%.

These patterns raise more questions than they answer. After-effects of the 1st wave. Differences in the timing of the waves. Effectiveness of restrictions. Further posts will attempt to explore these in more depth and draw international comparisons.
