A longitudinal analysis of 4,090 older adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing examined how persistence of loneliness and isolation associated with 17 health outcomes across physical, mental, cognitive and behavioural domains. Chronic loneliness was associated with worse general health, reduced functional capacity and lower mental wellbeing; chronicity mattered more than onset, and improvement in isolation status predicted better mental health and cognition. The finding refines understanding of the dose–response relationship between duration of social deficit and health burden.

*Why it is interesting: Distinguishes chronic from incident isolation and documents reversibility, sharpening the causal question between social deficit and mortality.*
