This study examined colorectal cancer incidence rates in the United States from 2000 to 2023\. It used SEER 21 data from the National Cancer Institute's SEER Program, covering 45.8% of the US population. The age-adjusted rate was 55.2 per 100,000 (95% CI 54.8 to 55.6) in 2000\. By 2022 it had fallen to 36.7 per 100,000 (95% CI 36.4 to 37.0). In 2023 it rose to 38.3 per 100,000 (95% CI 38.0 to 38.6), the first rise since SEER 21 began. The authors call the 2023 increase apparent and say it warrants further surveillance and investigation.

*Why it is interesting: After more than two decades of decline, colorectal cancer incidence rose in registries covering nearly half the US population. The authors call the 2023 rise apparent and say it needs further surveillance and investigation.*
