- Description: In 8,164 English adults aged 60 and over followed across three ELSA waves, every socioeconomic indicator examined was independently associated with the gap between reported loneliness and measured social isolation, with renting and low internet use marking the largest vulnerability.

The study measured "social asymmetry" — the standardised difference between UCLA-3 loneliness and a Berkman-Syme social network isolation score — in 8,164 English adults aged 60 and over across ELSA waves 7 to 9 (2014-2019). Higher education (β=0.44), income (β=0.22) and subjective social status were associated with less loneliness than network size would predict; social housing (β=-0.41), private renting (β=-0.35), rare or no internet use (β=-0.26) and area deprivation (β=-0.20) with more. Associations persisted after adjustment for psychological covariates.

*Why it is interesting: It separates felt loneliness from measured isolation and shows the discrepancy itself has a socioeconomic gradient, which matters for how isolation exposures are specified in mortality analyses.*
