- Description: In US claims data on 4,681 adults with type 2 diabetes starting a GLP-1 receptor agonist, 68.4% of adherent continuous glucose monitor users were still on the drug at 12 months against 51.9% of matched non-users (adjusted hazard ratio for stopping 0.56).

A matched cohort from US administrative claims for 2017 to 2024 compared GLP-1 receptor agonist discontinuation between 934 adults with type 2 diabetes using continuous glucose monitoring adherently and 3,747 matched non-users on non-intensive therapy. At one year 68.4% of monitor users remained on the drug against 51.9% of non-users, an adjusted hazard ratio for discontinuation of 0.56 (95% CI 0.49-0.63). Matching covered age, sex, ethnicity, therapy, comorbidity and insurance but not motivation or glycaemic control, which could account for part of the difference.

*Why it is interesting: Persistence rather than initiation decides whether GLP-1 drugs have any population-scale effect, and about half of the non-users here had stopped within a year.*
