- Description: A CDC WONDER analysis of 258,675 US deaths from 1999 to 2020 mentioning both type 2 diabetes and cardiac arrest found age-adjusted rates rising 2.72% a year to 2014 and 9.55% a year thereafter, highest among Hispanic and American Indian/Alaska Native adults.

The authors used US multiple-cause mortality files to count deaths at age 25 and over with both type 2 diabetes (E11) and cardiac arrest (I46) recorded, 1999-2020\. Age-adjusted mortality rose by 2.72% a year to 2014 and by 9.55% a year to 2020, was higher in men (6.75 vs 4.36 per 100,000), and was highest among Hispanic (10.92) and non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native (10.16) populations against 4.35 among non-Hispanic White adults. Increases were steepest in younger adults, and highest in the West and in metropolitan areas.

*Why it is interesting: A steeply accelerating cardiometabolic death rate concentrated in younger and minority populations, measured from the conditions recorded on death certificates.*
