Method note
This tracker shows period life expectancy at age 65 for women and men: the average number of further years a person aged 65 would live if the death rates of the period stayed as they were. It is a summary of that period's mortality, not a forecast of how long anyone now aged 65 will live. Every figure is the one the statistical office publishes; we do not calculate life expectancy ourselves, and we do not adjust, smooth or model the figures.
The offices publish over different periods, so the latest figures do not all cover the same years. The United Kingdom figures are ONS's national life tables, each covering three years (the latest 2022 to 2024), which is ONS's headline measure; ONS also publishes single years, which it describes as more volatile. Denmark publishes two-year periods only. Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and the United States publish single calendar years; Germany's figures from 2022 rest on the 2022 Census, a break in the series. Japan's figures come from its annual abridged life tables, with the complete life tables every five years; figures before 1971 exclude Okinawa.
The Netherlands needs a particular caution. CBS counts age as the age reached by 31 December, which puts its figures about 0.4 years above figures at exact age 65, such as those Eurostat publishes for the Netherlands. We show CBS's figures as published; compare the Dutch line's shape over time rather than its level against the others.
