Datasets behind our papers
The datasets the papers we publish use most: what each is, who runs it, and how to get it.
- UK Biobank 10 papers
- 100,000 Genomes Project 1 papers
- TriNetX 8 papers
- Korea's National Health Insurance Service database 6 papers
- National Inpatient Sample (US) 4 papers

UK Biobank
A long-running study of 500,000 UK adults recruited at ages 40 to 69 in 2006–2010. It holds questionnaires, physical measures, blood biomarkers, imaging and genetic data for every participant, linked to their later health records, and is run by the charity UK Biobank. Approved researchers worldwide can use it by application. www.ukbiobank.ac.uk
Our papers using it (10)
- Polygenic modification of statin benefit may arise from trial eligibility criteria
- Mid-life exercise of about an hour a day reduces hip fracture risk
- Swapping sleep for activity relates to mortality differently in short sleepers
- A blood protein score of cellular ageing predicted death in UK Biobank
- Uncertainty in a biological age estimate is itself associated with mortality
- Polygenic scores add most to prediction where clinical risk is already low
- The most active mid-life adults in UK Biobank report more fractures
- Isolation's link with death was weaker in UK Biobank adults using mixed transport
- Swings in blood pressure between visits carry higher abdominal aortic aneurysm risk
- Kidney stones were half as common in UK Biobank adults with healthier habits
100,000 Genomes Project
Whole genomes of about 85,000 NHS patients with rare diseases or cancer, and of their families, sequenced between 2013 and 2018 by Genomics England. Each genome is linked to the person's NHS records, and the data are analysed only inside Genomics England's secure research environment. Access is by application, through membership of its research network. www.genomicsengland.co.uk
Our papers using it (1)
TriNetX
A commercial network of de-identified electronic health records from more than 170 healthcare organisations, mostly in the US, covering diagnoses, procedures, medications and laboratory results for upwards of 100 million patients. The data stay inside each hospital and are queried through TriNetX's own platform. Access is through a licence or a member institution. trinetx.com
Our papers using it (8)
- GLP-1 agonists and atrial fibrillation in non-diabetic obesity with kidney disease
- Kidney disease progressed less often on a GLP-1 drug plus SGLT2 inhibitor
- New heart failure was slightly less common on tirzepatide than semaglutide
- GLP-1 agonists show no effect on atrial fibrillation in obese HFpEF patients
- GLP-1 users with obesity and raised CRP died less often, with heart attacks unchanged
- Atrial fibrillation recurrence after ablation was similar on GLP-1, SGLT2 or both
- Pancreatic cancer risk on GLP-1 drugs depends on the diabetes drug compared
- Adults with obesity and asthma on GLP-1 drugs had fewer recorded exacerbations
Korea's National Health Insurance Service database
Claims, health-screening, long-term care and death records for the whole South Korean population, held by the single national insurer. Sample cohorts are offered for remote analysis and fuller extracts at secure sites. Access is by application with ethics approval, and fees apply. nhiss.nhis.or.kr
Our papers using it (6)
- Depression recorded after cancer diagnosis and suicide risk in 755,079 South Korean adults
- Seven in ten Korean heated tobacco and cigarette users moved to cigarettes
- Korean adults with depression and unstable incomes have 18% higher mortality
- Abdominal obesity and high blood sugar rose in Korean screening from 2014 to 2023
- Parathyroid cancer in Korea rose fivefold, and benign parathyroid disease faster still
- Slow walking and a low cognitive score at 66 predict dementia in Korea
National Inpatient Sample (US)
The largest all-payer database of US hospital stays: an annual sample of about one in five discharges from community hospitals. It is run by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality as part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, and is bought by file. hcup-us.ahrq.gov/nisoverview.jsp
Our papers using it (4)
- Deaths after CPR in US hospitals remained above pre-pandemic levels through 2022
- Cardiogenic shock deaths fall as hospital cardiac capability rises in US admissions
- Kidney disease stage tracks in-hospital deaths in STEMI shock on circulatory support
- Asian Pacific Islanders had worse in-hospital outcomes after heart attack in the US
Medicare claims (US)
Billing records of US Medicare for people aged 65 and over and some younger disabled people, covering hospital, physician and drug claims. They are held by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and released to researchers by application and fee through ResDAC. resdac.org
Our papers using it (6)
- Neighbourhood deprivation and excess mortality after clinical risk adjustment in Medicare
- Enzalutamide in prostate cancer costs AUD$835,580 per QALY in ENZAMET trial analysis
- Wildfire smoke PM2.5 is associated with higher dementia incidence in older US adults
- Empagliflozin's lower cardiovascular risk is similar across social groups in Medicare
- SGLT2 inhibitors show no new safety signals in diabetic kidney disease
- Diabetes was more common in older US influenza deaths than in COVID-19 deaths
NHANES (US)
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, run by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. It is a nationally representative US sample interviewed, examined and given laboratory tests in two-year cycles since 1999, with mortality follow-up through the National Death Index. Public-use files are free to download. www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes
Our papers using it (4)
- Moderate-to-vigorous activity and cardiovascular mortality in US adults with MASLD

Track record
How sources have fared: preprints later published or withdrawn, series revised and by how much.
These tables are drawn from what this site has recorded. They cover the preprints it has reported and what became of them, the revisions official sources have made to their own figures, and where the site's items come from. They say nothing about sources the site does not read, and they are not a rating of anyone's work.
