Method note

This tracker shows how many people died in each week, from all causes, exactly as each country's statistical office publishes the figure. We do not adjust, smooth or model the numbers, and we do not estimate excess mortality: that needs a baseline of expected deaths, and choosing a baseline is modelling.

The countries do not count in the same way, so compare the shape of each line over time rather than its level against another country's. The United Kingdom figures are deaths registered in the week, not deaths that occurred in it. ONS compiles them from its own figures for England and Wales and those of National Records of Scotland and NISRA; weeks run Saturday to Friday, except in Scotland, where they run Monday to Sunday. Germany counts deaths by date of death in ISO weeks, and the United States by date of death in weeks ending on Saturday. The Dutch figures are CBS's weekly series, in weeks running Monday to Sunday; where CBS splits a week at New Year, the two parts are added back together, which is the only arithmetic done here. Denmark's figures come through Eurostat, supplied by Statistics Denmark, and run several weeks behind the others.

Recent weeks are provisional everywhere and change as late registrations arrive. Destatis estimates the latest nine weeks to allow for late reports, and its estimates are shown as published. NCHS does not adjust its US counts, which it describes as at least 94% complete within eight weeks, so the latest eight US weeks are drawn dashed and the table shows the week before them.

Every release collected is kept, so changes to past weeks can be traced. The most recent are listed under Revisions below, and the JSON download holds the releases themselves.

Sources and licences

Japan publishes deaths monthly (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare vital statistics), not weekly, so it is not in this tracker.
