Norway's total alcohol advertising ban has held for 50 years through legal challenges

A review of Norwegian government documents, parliamentary debate and court rulings traces the comprehensive alcohol marketing ban in force since July 1975, finding it has withstood repeated legal challenge and been extended to alcohol-free beers and social media.

The paper reviews the political process behind Norway's 1975 Alcohol Act, the scope of its ban on all mass marketing of alcohol to Norwegian audiences, and the legal cases that have defined its boundaries. It reports that the ban has been applied to new channels including social media and to alcohol-free variants of branded products, and that it retains broad public support. No consumption, exposure or harm outcomes are estimated.

Why it is interesting: A documentary account of how the ban has been defined and defended in law, with no estimate of its effect on drinking.
