This retrospective study used nationwide French hospital discharge data on centenarians from 2014 to 2023. There were 110,585 acute stays, of which 12.1% involved surgery, and 21,012 inpatient rehabilitation stays. Acute stays fell from 53.2 to 45.4 per 100 centenarians, and rehabilitation stays from 10.3 to 8.3. An emergency department admission preceded 70.0% of acute stays, rising from 68.0% to 72.9%. In-hospital mortality was 14.9% per stay, and musculoskeletal conditions made up a growing 16.9% of acute stays. The findings are descriptive only.
Why it is interesting: Centenarians are a growing population, and this study gives nationwide figures on their hospital use over ten years. Emergency entry is rising, and musculoskeletal conditions take a growing share of acute and rehabilitation stays.
