Weight loss after a prediabetes diagnosis tracked lower mortality 34 years later

In 540 Chinese adults with impaired glucose tolerance followed for 34 years, those losing at least 5% of body weight during the first six years had a hazard ratio of 0.67 for all-cause death and 0.56 for cardiovascular death compared with those who lost none.

The Da Qing cohort of 540 adults with impaired glucose tolerance was split by weight change over the six-year lifestyle intervention and followed for 34 years. Participants losing 5% or more of baseline weight had hazard ratios of 0.67 for all-cause death, 0.56 for cardiovascular death and 0.48 for heart failure hospitalisation relative to those with no weight loss, although grouping by weight change after randomisation is a post hoc comparison. Median time to cardiovascular death was 6.5 years later in the high weight loss group.

Why it is interesting: A 34-year follow-up of mortality by early weight change in people with impaired glucose tolerance.
