The study examines how far changes in drug-poisoning deaths account for the change in US life expectancy from 2019 to 2024. It is a cross-sectional analysis of the US population over those six years. Changes in drug-poisoning deaths are set against changes in life expectancy across the same period. A cross-sectional design of this kind describes how the two moved together rather than establishing cause. How much of the change is assigned to drug poisoning also depends on how such deaths are certified.
Why it is interesting: The study attaches a single cause to the movement in US life expectancy since 2019, rather than reporting the total change alone. It matters to those attributing recent US mortality change by cause.
