Few Australian paediatricians surveyed offer vaping cessation support to adolescents

In a national survey of Australian paediatricians and registrars in 2023, about two-thirds routinely advised adolescents against vaping but only one in five provided cessation support and one in three knew of referral options.

A web-based cross-sectional survey of 90 paediatricians and paediatric registrars practising across Australia between May and October 2023 measured knowledge, attitudes and practices on adolescent vaping cessation, using the WHO 5A framework. Ninety per cent recognised nicotine addictiveness and over two-thirds routinely advised against vaping, but only one in five provided cessation support and one in three arranged follow-up. Reported barriers were limited referral knowledge, insufficient time and discomfort.

Why it is interesting: Indicates how little of the clinical system is set up to deliver adolescent vaping cessation, as reported by the clinicians themselves.
